FAQ

Frequently
Asked Questions

  1. How does auto transport work?
Auto transport companies pick up your vehicle, load it onto a carrier (open or enclosed), and transport it to the destination. They may offer door-to-door or terminal-to-terminal service.

  2. What types of auto transport carriers are available?
There are two main types: open carriers (exposed to the elements) and enclosed carriers (protected from the elements). Enclosed carriers are more expensive but provide better protection.

  3. How do I choose the right auto transport company?
Research companies, read reviews, check their licensing and insurance, and get quotes from multiple providers. Choose one that meets your needs and budget.

  4. How much does auto transport cost?
The cost varies depending on factors like distance, vehicle size, type of carrier, and location. On average, it can range from $500 to $1,500 or more.

  5. How long does auto transport take?
Transit times can vary, but for cross-country transport, it typically takes 7-10 days. Shorter distances may take a few days.

  6. Is my vehicle insured during transport?
Auto transport carriers are required to carry auto liability and cargo insurance.  Your vehicle is insured under the cargo portion of their policy.  Make sure your broker is verifying carriers insurance coverage before the vehicle is picked up.

  7. Can I ship personal items in my vehicle?
Most auto transport companies don't allow personal items in the vehicle due to safety and liability concerns. Check with your chosen company for their specific policy.

  8. Do I need to prepare my vehicle for transport?
You should remove personal items, deactivate your alarm system, and ensure your vehicle is in good working condition. The transport company will provide specific guidelines.

  9. Can I track the progress of my vehicle during transport?
Many companies offer tracking services or provide updates on your vehicle's location and status.

  10. What paperwork is required for auto transport?
It is a good idea to keep your vehicle paperwork with you.  It is not necessary for these documents to be with the vehicle.  Your driver will complete a bill of lading that will indicate the pick up and drop off location, vehicle info and an inspection of the vehicle condition.  This will be signed by the customer at pick up and again at delivery.  No other paperwork is required.

  11. Can I ship non-running or inoperable vehicles?
Yes, many auto transport companies can accommodate non-running vehicles, but you should inform them of the condition in advance.  Typical upcharge for the additional winching and tie-down work is $100.

  12. Are there any size or weight restrictions for vehicles?
Auto transport companies can usually accommodate a wide range of vehicle sizes and weights, but they may charge extra for oversized or heavy vehicles.  Additionally toolboxes or other modification could add additional weight and incur additional costs.

  13. Can I schedule a specific pick-up and delivery date?
You can request specific dates, but the availability may depend on the company's schedule and your flexibility.

  14. What if my vehicle is damaged during transport?
In the event of damage, you should document it with photos and contact the transport company immediately. Make sure to note the damages on the BOL as well.  Carriers and/or their insurance policy are responsible for repairs or compensation.

Always remember to communicate openly with your chosen auto transport company and thoroughly inspect the vehicle before finalizing the shipment.
